View the actual movie of piracy in the Maldives

SONS OF THE MAYFLOWER is an hour long weekly documentary "reality show" with 60 year old Edward Brewster narrating his adventurous past as he recreates them 30 years later. Edward Brewster's story began in 1968 when he drove from England to Nepal and back. But, the story being retold starts off in Kure, Japan, 1978. It was here that Ed took possession of a US Navy MSC (minesweeper coastal) from the United States Government. Purchased for $32,000, in fine working condition (street value: $20,000,000), it had just completed the treaty service with Japan where it was used as a training vessel. The Navy's yacht, this 144 foot specimen of fine design, had not an ounce of magnetic material aboard. Nautical types can appreciate the twin 500 pound Danforth anchors made of bronze, the power plants of aluminum and the generator plants of stainless. The ship is all wood, mahogany, held to oak ribs by over 30,000 evadure bronze lag bolts. This ship could travel up to 17 knots per hour.

The first cruise for "Alice" was to rendezvous with the Cousteau Institute at a site that they described as the least touched place on the face of the planet. The minesweeper, with its crew of 14, took on Jean Michel's crew of 60 adventurers at Wewak. They then motored to the Bismarck Archipelago and the Hermit Islands for months of diving.

Alice then made way to Singapore for repairs and stores. Several months later she and her crew of 12 left the peninsula to cross the Andaman, the Indian and the Arabian seas heading for the Suez Canal. Putting in for water and repairs in the lee of the Maldives, with prior radioed permission, Alice is pirated. The ship's doctor was hogtied, thrown into a canoe, and taken hostage by hundreds of natives with their spears and clubs.

The ship's captain and first mate then went ashore to try to rescue our friend, but they were separated and taken hostage also. The club wielding canoeists returned to disable the Alice so she could be salvaged on the shore. Quick action led to an escape. The ship was then escorted to Diego Garcia by American military. The incident generated major news from around the world, and was also a feature story on Walter Cronkite. This was the first Muslim hijacking of it kind. Much of the piracy and recue was videotaped.

Piracy aside, the big side story was the discovery of Diego Garcia.

During the piracy, radio contact with the president of the ham operators' organization was established. He patched the connection from his vacation in Nairobi to stateside and the US Coast Guard. They instructed the acting captain to get Alice away. "Keep her safe as negotiations are made for the hostages' release." Alice was then dropped food and water and escorted to Diego Garcia by a US Navy plane. There the crew waited for the international diplomacy and worldwide press reportage about this secret base in the middle of the Indian Ocean that the US had been building for 25 years.

This is the story of the Alice returning to her old adventures and making new ones. Many of her original crew are anxious to return to sea, the Hermit Islands and even the Maldives. The episodes will explore a new genre of moviemaking. Footage will arrive on a continuous basis via robotically controlled internet video cameras. Editing and considerable time delay will allow for the live adventures to conclude stateside before airing on a weekly basis. The segments will touch upon Ed's adventures prior to his purchase of the Alice, perhaps revisiting Beirut, Bangkok, Baalbec, Bogota' and Burma, which will be shown in a combination of narrative, photos and new and old video to keep the audience hooked into the new adventures as they take place.
